Honeywell recently revamped it’s Lyric smart thermostat to include support for HomeKit, Apple’s home automation framework. This is unique, as Nest, which is king of the mountain Lyric is trying to climb, is now owned by Google, and won’t feature HomeKit support anytime soon.
The added features of HomeKit mean that users can control their smart thermostat with Siri. For now, Siri integration is the main feature, but as more and more HomeKit devices make it to market, the possibilities are pretty cool. If you have HomeKit enabled L|ED lights and this Lyric thermostat for example, you could set an accent light to shine blue when the A/C is cooling, and orange when the heater is on. Or with a HomeKit enabled garage door opener or front door lock, you could set the thermostat to start making the room more comfortable as you unlock the front door or open the garage door.
As more HomeKit devices are released, we’ll be able to do more and more of these “Star Trek” type of automations with Siri. For now, you can order the HomeKit enabled Lyric (make sure it’s the right model, an older, identical-in-appearance model is more readily available online– and cheaper) from Honeywell’s site.
